We just purchased a 2001 Eurovan camper. Excuse my lack of knowledge, but how can we utilize our AC items such as blow dryer, coffee maker, etc. without being hooked-up to external power. Is there a converter we need for each appliance?
Batteries are so varied it almost takes an engineer to figure it out; having said that, your aux. battery should be a deep cycle. I went for a yellow top Optima 34/78 Gel battery $ 140. USD and a battery gauge to ensure I don't drop below 9.5 volts before re-charging,

You simply need to purchase a power inverter to run your AC items with.
You can find them at auto parts stores or discount stores like Wal Mart of target. This converts the 12 volt current to 120 volt. Check the wattage for each appliance and make sure that you have an inverter with enough wattage to run it. It's best to buy the most highest wattage inverter that you can afford to be on the safe side.
It depends on what you are plugging in and for how long. I run mine off the auxilery battery. It has a low-voltage warning that lets me know if the battery is running low. Then I just start the van and re-charge the battery. It's either this, or purchase 12 volt equpiment.
