Seriously thinking about pulling out what appears to be a useless Norcold frig in our recently purchased 95 VW camper. I have heard/read many of the horror stories about this frig (leveling, LP vs battery use, etc.). Anyone out there with suggestions/advice/comments/help/info, feel free to send them along. We love everything else about the camper!
The owner's guide for the ref say that as long as you are comfortable in the van, it's level good enough. Don't worry about when you drive. Battery is only for when you are driving. Gas works great. I can freeze mine. But i've not been above 4000'.
Hi Linda: We have a '95 Eurovan Camper purchased new and have had luck with the fridge, but it must be level (you get one of those little round levelers and keep in fridge--and one at driver's seat if you need it to level while parking). It's not that bad to level off. We found that the gas keeps it very cold. When driving you use the battery, when hooked up to electricity you use that, but if boondocking (no hookups) use the gas. I know it doesn't have a freezer, but has a nice adjustable shelf which I find helpful. We also keep a porta potti (which I cover like a hassock) in it behind the passenger seat.
Ned,
I also have 95 EV and I share the same opinion as you in regard to useless NORCOLD cooler. Have you received any constructive comments? I'm ready to dump the one I have and install a 2-way refrigerator, I already have one in my boat and I do get ice cubes as I operate in AC mode. I guess the only issue about replacement frig is the size and the color to match the existing cabinetry!
Mike
My 1997 euro winne has the norcold ref. It operates great but after only a few uses on gas the carbon builds up and the ref has to be pulled out & cleaned.
Is there any way to get around this?
Thanks for any input.
Gas Refrigerators are a pane in the but. I have the solution and I was planning a business doing the conversion.
First.- There is a 12Volts " electric only" refrigerator in many LeSharo motorhomes
that works with a vibrating rather than a rotating pump and uses freon or substitute
it runs at 4amp is fantastic, try to find one and dump the 3 way amonia monster that has to be leveled a pain in the but. I burned 6 of them.
Second: In my diesel 22Ft.Itasca motorhome there was a 8cuft. unit that did not work. I bought an 8cuft. chinese made from Fryes for $200 this is a regular 120VAC home unit but very efficient. I bought an industrial grade DC-AC inverter for $350
all the cheap inverters did not last they can not take the start up current so get
one that has a husky transformer type.
This unit has been working great for 3 years, no leveling no monking around and
I placed a switch to flip over to external AC input when I am in an RV camp.
If I do this commercialy I will place a selenoid to flip when external AC is present.
I HATE GAS REFRIGERATORS.
We have a Norcold Ref. in our trailer and I broke the side out of the large size shelf on the door. The one that will hold a 1/2 gallon jug. On the parts list I found it was #999. Do you have any of these and what is the cost. Thankyou
