1995 E350 Ambulance Matt 1-31-08
I have a 1995 E350 7.3L diesel turbocharged, a few months ago the o/d light started to blink and the tranny started to shift hard and not at the right times. I serviced the tranny and also checked wiring etc.The light went out but came back on today with the same problems. I also had a local ford dealership plug into the truck and said I needed to replace the trans, I've now put another 10-15 000 kms on it. Any idea or pointers yoiu could give me?
Thanks

The O/D light flashing is a specific fail. It means the Torque converter lockup isn't registering as "on" at the right speed. This could be a wiring issue to the transmission, a bad speed sensor or a failed solinoid in the valve body of the transmission. Potentially all (relatively) cheap and easy things to fix, but difficult things to diagnose. The codes they found would have been very helpful.

If your vehicle is OBD2, this will make it easier to find, but I suspect you have an OBD1 vehicle (I could be wrong; The emissions sticker under the hood will say for sure). With OBD1 you can pull codes without a scanner. OBD2 is scanner only.

Start with what codes are set in the computer and work your way out to find a pattern. That way you fix the problem without "Throwing parts at it".

Hope that helps!

One of the 1st things to check is your Brake light switch. A bad switch or one that is not adjusted right will keep the torque from locking up. As soon as the brake light comes on the lock comes off.

That's a great point Rich, but if there was a problem in the brake light circuit, the ABS light would be flashing constantly as well.

Our ambulance's braking was working fine until it got stuck in deep snow a week ago. Now the brakes are soft and they need to be pumped to stop. Needless to say I'm not driving it. There is no fluid loss from the cylinder so at least theres no brake in the lines. Is there a way to fix the MC problem without getting a new one?
