Onan 6.5 Propane Gen. Rich Tiesso 1-8-08
I have an Onan 6.5 propane generator in my motorhome. It will not start when it is raining or wet outside. It is also getting harder to start after sitting for a week. It starts with a shot of starting fluid if it is dry outside but will not start if it is wet.

SUspect two things right off. First the motor is worn out, if it needs stating fluid to start ity has issues. Second the propane is harder to ignite than gasoline. You have a problem with the ignition system. Worn plugs makes it worse and moisture just allows any fault to show up. I can't rember if you hav a ditributor cap or not but new cap, rotor, wires and plus is a good place to start. I have also seen relay wierd control problems caused by dirt and moisture in the controls. Good Luck

I have an onan 6.5lp the problem is it is surging. I have replaced reg,air filter, plugs and cleaned the carb. Repair shop has checked fuel pressure and vol but is puzzled.Once I cleaned the carb I can not keep it running. It will start right up but runs for 15 sec then stops. Any ideas.

It only has 481 hours on the onan, no distributor and new plugs.

Did you replace the wires? Did you use the silicone grease to help them seal at both ends? It still sounds like ignition trouble. Good Luck

As for the comment above about propane being harder to ignite is wrong, As for the condition you have asked about, it sounds like bad ign. wires for the problem of not starting when wet, as for not starting after sitting for some time you might just get it tuned up ( cap, rotor, wires, plugs) now also you have not said how old the unit is, as for propane 1 main draw back all the perfume that it put in the propane so we can smell dose clog up the Diaphragms as they get all caked up with a whiteish coting that will stop it from working so have that checked also.
Good luck
