Hi - I have a pop up that I just bought, and it has the Dometic RM4223 3-way fridge in it. It works on AC, and seems to work on gas (it has been on for about 45 mins, and is getting cool, so should be ok), but I can't seem to get it to work on 12 volts. I have 12v to the block on the back, so it is hooked into the battery, but I am not sure it is working, as it does not seem to be getting cold.
I have 2 questions:
1. Is there a way to meter it or something to see if it is working?
2. Are there any recommended troubleshooting steps, or any ideas on what could be wrong?
Thanks in advance for the help! I am learning a ton on this site! (this is my first trailer...)
My best advice is to forget the 12 volt is there at all. The 12 volt element tends to be half the size of the 110 in wattage(not sure about yours) Works poorly and in my old motor home draws 80% of what the alternator can produce. To test it you need to find the 110 and 12 volt elements. the 12 volt will have considerably heavyer wiring to it. Do a ohms test on the element. If it has a relitvly low resistance (Less than 50 ohms)its probably ok. There is a spec but I no longer have my repair manuals. On most fridges the 12 volt element will kill the battery in the unit in a couple hours and takes a long long time to cool the fridge. We tell our customers that 8 hrs is the correct test time for any testing. The 12 volt element will take longer and work poorly in comparasen to LPG or 110 volt. Also if you want to test it by using 12 volt off the converter I recomend you put an additional 12 charger on your unit to not stress your converter. I gave up on 12 volt for mine and just get it cold before leaving and putting it on LPG any time we are parked. It keeps every thing frozen if we stop for an hour at lunch and don't spend more than 8 hrs on the road a day. Good Luck
