I have a 1999 for ranger i got in it yesterday and it was making a clicking sound,it was coming from inside the dash panel i traced it down to a fuse relay behind the passenger glove box and behind the radio and to the left you can fell the relay box clicking what is this box if i unplug it will my truck run ok it is draing my battery and truck will not start unless i jump it off then this thing keeps clicking and draing my battery.
There are 2 things that could be located in that area: The control box for the factory alarm or the control box for the air bags. After 1995, Ford started combining a lot of common relays and control circuits into a "Generic Electrical Module" or GEM. This is usually located under the passenger or driver's side seat; I've never seen it mounted behind a dash but I haven't been working as a tech for about 10 years, so this might have changed.
If the module clicking was part of the airbag circuit, you would see the air bag light lit on the dash. If you have a key fob with buttons to lock and unlock the door, this could very well be a failed alarm system control and you can disconnect it without too much drama beyond needing to lock and unlock the doors manually.
If the module clicking is a GEM unit, then disconnecting it will cause all of the gauges on the dash to stop functioning as well as the radio and most if not all the electrical devices in the cab. The truck should still start, but if you have an auto trans you will not be able to shift into gear.
Hope that helps!
PS. How do you know the battery itself hasn't gone bad and the clicking isn't related to the battery dying?
