I have a 2001 Ford F350 with a Triton V10 engine. On several occasions it has continued to rev up right after I start it. Last week while stopped at a crosswalk the engine suddenly started to rev up, to the extent that the rear wheels broke loose and started to smoke before I could shut the ignition off. Needless to say, a potentially dangerous malfunction. Has anyone heard of a similar situation or have suggestions on the cause/cure. The local Ford dealer took a look at it but couldn't find anything wrong. Thanks, Mike
Ther are only 2 things that can cause this:
* The accelerator pedal/cable is sticking or being interfered with
* The idle air control valve (IAC) is hanging open
Both of these fails will set a code but more than likely will not turn on the check engine light. Aftermarket cruise control is a typical source of interference, but factory cruise control can cause this problem as well. Your rig is OBD2 compliant, so you need a scanner to pull codes.
Thanks Phil, I appreciate the response. I can understand that if the pedal or cable was sticking it would probably maintain about the same RPM when you let off the pedal. But in the case where it actually went from an idle to 4000 or so RPMs completely on its own, it would most likely have to be something else wouldn't it? I'm thinking the problem must be tied to the cruise control. Mike
