2003 trek with workhorse. after a normal drive, intermittent power loss of engine. also backfire.
this ususally occurs after a slowdown or off ramp. usually only during hot weather. Have been chasing the EGR. replaced twice, found melted egr wires, added cooling ducts to cool egr in doghouse.
Also noticed this problems started after recall and replacement of cats to meet CA. emissions. Could the Cats cause a vapor lock? Cats too much back pressure?
Engine is 8.1 with 50k.
Vapor Lock - have tried to resolve this for three years- gone through three fuel pumps until I recenlty discovered the cause. Excess gas in line in the engine area gets hot and when returned to gas tank, causes the vapor lock. Must have tank dropped, inspect fuel pump, and a modification done. Local and national workhorse reps know nothing about it, I learned it from a Regional guy who covers Georgia and Florida - and the heat in these areas makes the condition even worse.
Same problem on my 03 Fleetwood SOuthwind (WH Chassis). It's also called fuel cavitation and it's on the 02-03 chassis. Fuel boils in the lines due to proximity to the exhaust underneath them the whole way back. No fix but I'm going to try insulative/reflective tape over the lines. Not fun - happens more in hot weather of course. bob
