Have a 1999 Chevy Van - Hear a whining/whirling noise at the compressor/clutch when turning AC on. There is no noise when clutch is not engaged. Does this indicate a failing bearing on the clutch or the compressor? Otherwise, cools ok.
Whining/whirring noise is normal to some extent. Newer A/C compressors (94 and newer) are much noisier. The noise you don't want to hear is a rattling or grinding noise when the compressor is engaged. R134a uses a thinner lube, so you get a noise almost like polishing glass with steel wool.
