Bought this RV from a dealership. It was sitting on the lot for at least 2 years. I don't think it had been driven until I purchased it. On my way back home with it, it would not go up the hills very well. It chugged and almost stalled. I had to drive it up hills at about 5mph. I called back the dealer ship on my cell phone and that's when I found out it had not been driven in two years. When I got home 4 hours later (I live 100 miles from dealership), I called back the dealership and asked what could be done. They told me to have the fuel filter checked, and possibly changed.
I had this done and more: fuel tank was emptied, lines flushed, fuel pump changed twice (we thought the first pump was not working), the regulater was changed and the fuel lines wrapped with a special tape. No improvement whatsoever. The outfit who's trying to fix it wants to install an external fuel pump to see if two fuel pumps would help. I'm not sure it will cure the problem. Any advise out there Please...Pleaaaaaaaaaaaaase! :-(
Hello D
I would NOT add second fuel pump.
is it a Ford or Chevy engine-?
is it possible the exhaust is stopped up?
not sure your 95 can be re timed---most are preset and any movement of the distributor will mess up engine--surely it is computer controlled.
check the Air filter-too-might have bird nest of something stopping air flow, hopefully it is something simple.
rich in Va.
I think Richard is on the right track, and I would suspect an exhaust problem or a collapsed catalytic converter. If this is a Ford motor, timing can be set; Advance is partially mechanical and partially computer controlled but baseline can be set. After 2 years, I'd suspect your rig needs a full tune-up. Again, if this is a Ford motor the sparkplug wires need to be routed correctly; One symptom of cross-firing is a loss of power.
When the rig is cool, get underneath and hit the mufflers a few times. If you hear lots of rattling, you've found a potential cause of your problem.
Thank you very much Phil and Richard for your input. Yes, it is a Ford engine. The fuel filter was changed, the air filter was also checked and cleaned. But no major tune up done, as far as playing with the timing.
Before getting your replies, I called the manufacturer's 1-800#. The suggestion was that there could be a pin hole in the vacuum advance line, or the line could be partially collapsed.
The mechanics here (and they're trying their best but their specialty is fuel systems; our specialists market here is limited) are looking at the line now and will also contact our Ford dealership Re: timing. I'll make sure they check the exhaust pipes too.
Once the problem is resolved, I will let you guys know. Someone else could run into the same situation some day. I will make sure to let the Manufacturer's helpline know as well.
Thanks again! Very greatful :-)
Well, the saga continues.
The gas tank was removed again and sent out for a good cleaning. However I was told that it was impossible to properly get to the baffles to clean everything out, short of cutting a bigger hole in the tank; obviously not a good thing to do. Sure enough, the RV ran well for about 200 miles, and then it started again. No power on the hills, backfiring, and then the engine light would come on. Got her back home and called the dearlership who sold us the RV. The manager agreed that the gas tank had to be changed, and agreed to pay for a new fuel tank, a new fuel pump and the labour costs. The fuel pump had just about packed it in and there was nothing but rusty stuff in the fuel filter. The manager said that when they take an RV in as a trade, they look at the cosmetic parts mainly and have a quick look over to ensure the rig is running. Well, who knows with the previous owner if he kept the gas tank full as part of his winterization, and the fact that the RV sat on the dealership's lot for about three years is a sure indication of rusting.
Now, the mechanics are "BAFFLED". They searched high and low in Canada and the US for a replacement tank..none to be had, except for a second hand one that would cost $500. US to purchase and about $300. US to ship. Again, is it going to be in great shape or full of rust? The Fleetwood Manufacturer said they don't make those tanks for that particular year and model anymore. One of the mechanics refered me to a local outfit that will make me one for about $600.US Hopefully this will cure the problem once and for all.
I'm learning valuable information (I'll be a fuel system expert for my RV!) and a great lesson out of all this.
