Transmissions for diesel E350 Class B	Todd	6-6-07
I was cosidering the international Maxx force 5 for my project van. 200 horsepower, 440 pounds-feet of torque. (4.5 liter diesel V6) They claim it's rated for a 19000GVWR Box Van. Would this be enough power for my E350 EB Class B Conversion? Would it be possible to put a ZF AS Tronic 12 speed behind this engine? I've noticed that in the heavier fleet vehicles the engines are detuned and usually have a smaller power band. Does this improve their fuel economy? If so would the detuned 7.3 liter powerstroke be a better choice? This project is still on the drawing board and I have years to build it. If there is anything available to improve efficiency/ performance I want to do it. I'm looking to build something that would be part "Earthroamer", part "Sportsmobile", loosely based off my E350 EB Van. Any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks, Todd

The full-grunt 2007 E350 van (extended body and 6.0L powerstroke) is rated for 20,000# GCVW with the 4.10 rear axle ratio; 10,000 of which is "carrying" capacity (not stated in the guide if this is trailered weight, internal weight or some combination of both), so with the 19,000# GVWR, you're very close to the max that Ford built the vehicle to handle, giving up about 1000# of "carrying" capacity. If your van has the steeper rear axle ratio, the engine you proposed will match what the van is designed to do. Detuning is usually done to improve fuel economy or make the engine work well with cheap fuel. As for the 12 speed; Anything is possible, but is it practical or affordable? A highway vehicle gets by on 3 to 4 gears quite nicely. Hope that helps!
