Water heater P&T valve overflow Mary Hill 5-20-01
I have a houseboat that is essentially an RV on pontoons. It has a six gal Surburgan water heater. When I turn on the igniter (propane), it lights and heats up the water OK. The pressure relief valve starts leaking out water within 15 mins and leaks constantly...until I shut off the gas. The gas does not shut off by itself....runs continuously. I have replaced the hi-limit switch. I have also removed the anode rod, emptied and refilled the tank; was told I needed to do this to "replace the air bubble". The problem is not fixed. I don't know what else to do. Any suggestions?

What I gather from your description is that no matter how low you set the temperature setting, the burner will not cycle on and off as it should. Do you have a pilot or non-pilot model heater?

The water heater should shut off at about 140 water temp. You said ignitor so I'm assuming it is an electronic ignition. If it really doesn't ever shut off by itself, you need to find out why,,,the limit should shut it off at 190 degrees if the thermo doesn't. As to the leak, A new pop off valve may help but the quality of valves I've been seeing lately, I wouldn't bet on it. The papers with a new water heater will tell you to expect a little leaking after the heater has shut off. I'm interesting in this "air bubble" concept though,,, there is not suppose to be any air in the water heater.
