76 brave 440,after driving a few miles,turn off engin will not krank. after a cool down hit starter with hammer and it started. can anyone help?

Richard, Just read your post, hope you have it fixed by now. If not, have a good starter rebuilder look at the starter. After 40 yrs rebuilding those things, we found the rivet that cinnects the field coil ends to the case will deterioate from time and heat. Resistance will set up and will not make contact to complete the electrical loop of the coils. Hitting it with a hammer will jar it so it cranks a couple times then back to no start again. Ask them to replace the rivet with a stainless bolt and nut. This usually solves the problem. This is most common, but you can also have low amps to the starter thus causing an open in the armature. The hammer will also work in that case too. Explain your problem to a good rebuilder and ask his oponion as to what I said. He will know what to do for you. Good luck, Gene R.
