E-350 speedometer problem Red Barber 7-26-01
I purchased a "fixer-upper" motorhome built on a Ford E-350 chassis. It has the 460 cu. in. gas engine, automatic with overdrive. Shortly after I started driving it, the 'rear anti-lock brakes' warning light came on, and has stayed on. However the brakes have not given me any problems. On a recent 6000 mile trip, we noticed that the speedometer would occasionally twitch, expecially at speeds around 60-70 mph. It only happened maybe 5 or 6 times total. But on a weekend jaunt last week, the needle started jumping all over the place. From 0 to past 85 and all points in between. When this happens, it also effects the cruise control, so I don't think it is in the Guage itself. It has gotten so bad now that the speedometer only occasionally stops to indicate the speed, preferring instead to jump all over pretty much constantly.
I figured that I would be smart, and so I picked up a speedo cable from my local parts store. When I got under there to put in the new cable, I was shocked to find that I did not have a speedo cable! The place in the tailshaft where it should be inserted is blocked off with a nylon plate. I am speculating that this must mean an electronic speedometer setup, probably running off the anti-lock brakes' speed sensors in the rear wheels. Is this the case? How would I go about isolating this problem? Do you think this is related to the anti-lock brakes warning light I mentioned in the beginning?

Yes it is, there is a sensor mounted on top of the differential housing. Has two wires on it. take it out and replace it. They are not expensive. Also do, or have the differential oil changed and clean the inside. this sensor is magnetic and picks up metal.

Russel, thanks for the advice. It was indeed that sensor, and it took less than $30 and 45 minutes to have it all working like new again.
