Soon as I saw the post I knew it was a Ford...
You don't say model year, but I had a problem with an Aerostar where ABS warning came on, no cruise, no speedometer/odometer, no overdrive. Turned out to be the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) mounted on the differential housing. Part was about $18 from Ford. Difference I hear from your story is the "like neutral" part. My AStar (1992) had positions on the selector for Drive and Overdrive. If I used Drive it'd shift gears 1-2-3 OK. If I used OD it'd go 1-2-3-Neutral. This was four years ago, but I think I remember it right, and hope this helps. God Bless, jd
