TERRIBLE VIBRATION Jane 8-2-01
I just bought a 26",1988 Yellowstone Camino on a Ford Chassis and it has a TERRIBLE VIBRATION under it. I happens pretty much all the time but alot when accelerating. Is there something that usually goes on these larger vehicles?

Should be relatively smooth. My 1984 Class C (Van Chassis) on a Ford with 460 V8 (which you likely have) needs motor mounts. These are three thick rubber pillows laminated to steel brackets. One sits under the left of the engine, one under the right, one under the back of the transmission. They are relatively inexpensive but the ones under the engine are a little tight to get at. If you can get under the transmission's tailshaft housing (the back end)and gently pry up, you may see the mount is in pieces. REAR WHEELS MUST BE BLOCKED BOTH WAYS PARKING BRAKE SET, and transmission should be in neutral. Look and see if your oil filter is against the front of the front crossmember. Mine was... Let us know! God Bless, jd

I would look closely at the universal joints. At least grease them.

Re: TERRIBLE VIBRATION Bob 8-4-01
Does the engine run smooth at idle?? It does sound like motor mounts or u-joints, but a misfiring plug will do the same, or bad wires causing misfire under load

Thank you very much for your quick response. We removed and replaced the u-joints over the weekend and they were fine. Someone mentioned motor & tranny mounts, so we will also check them out. Thanks again, and if you can thinks of anything else, let me know.

Jd

I'm sorry about the other Jane's with no messages under your reply to me. I didn't know how to reply, and now I think I figured it out. Sorry. Thank you so much for your quick response to my message, I really appreciate it. We removed and replace the u-joints over the weekend and they were fine, but I will check out the motor mounts. The thing only has 37,000 miles on it, so I'm hoping it is not the transmission. I will let you know what we find out. Thanks again!

Jane,

I own a 1990 Callista Cove 26' Class C on a Ford E-350 Chassis. I had the U-joints, Carrier Bearing replaced plus the drive shaft balanced. Cost about $225 and drives like a million. Tom
Re: TERRIBLE VIBRATION Jane 8-7-01
Tom,
Thank you for the advice on balancing the drive shaft. I will give it a try.

Tom,

Jane Jane, If your unit has a two piece drive shaft, check the center support bearing. And as others have stated, check motor mounts. Then if this all checks out okay then have drive shaft rebalanced. Some times a balance wieght will be missing on the shaft for one reason or another. John M.
Re: TERRIBLE VIBRATION Jim J 12-28-04
I also have a vibration. I have a 90 Astro Van. V6, 4.3, rear wheel drive. I first notice a vibration when "decelarating" from about 55 mph. It has now begun to vibrate at about 45 mph or >. The severity of vibration is more or less at different times but mostly it vibrates significantly all the time, sometimes there is a "whump, whump" sound, seemingly from the rear as well, when it is vibrating (not otherwise).. Now sometimes the vibration secedes on decelaration. Acceleration alone does not produce the vibration. It seem to be related to speed mostly. Firestone, replaced a bent rim on front drivers side and repacked bearings on front passenger side. I have had the drive shaft removed and "trued" even though the mechanic stated before-hand that he saw no significant problem there. He further stated the U joints appear to be fine. At his recommendation I took it to a transmision place where the owner drove it but has not yet diagnosed it. He says I need to call for an appointment when he gets caught up on his work. But he did state that he does not think that it is the torque converter. Any suggestions here would be greatly appreciated.
