VW toad starting FAST FRED 8-13-01
We tow a 82VW Rabbit 4 wheels down and it workd great.

The VW runs great , after its warm, but that first 2 or three min , during the "first cold start" is a big pain.

Sounds like its flooding , even though I checked and replaced the air valve.

Constant cranking with a floored throttle will get it running on a cylinder or two , then it ROARS, only to stall again.

IF I catch it at the end of a roar , floor it , it will again run on a few cylinders , missing and stumbeling , but it gets better with each start.

This has the CIS fuel injection, if it only had a carb , I wouldnt be hoping for help.

Anyone else have an idea where to start??

I have replaced all vacum hoses and cleaned all the electric contacts I can find.

Car also shows upshift arrow in 4th , as added symptom.

MY local garage says go to VW , but they would cost more than this car is worth.

Hate to scrap a great TOWD that gets 33 mpg on gas, and runs great , but if the bride cant get it running with out me , out it has to go.

HELP

Most likely your warm-up regulator, it keeps the control pressure low to provide a richer mixture on engine warm up. It has an electrically heated bimetal strip that slowly warps during warm-up, gradually leaning mixture. It's actual operation is only testable with special gauges. So if you check the cold start valve, (extra injector that sprays fuel into the intake manifold during cold crank), and it's doing just that, then the valve and it's related thermo/time switch in the coolant passage are OK, this leads to the conclusion you have a failed warm-up regulator.

THANKS!!
I took mine apart {nothing to loose} and the guts looked OK but the diaphram area was Rusty!,, probably not working as it should.

AS my toad is kinda old and very beat {used in NYC , parked outside 15 years} I'mm borrowing a unit to install , from a buddy with a spair.

VW wants $185 for a new one , which is OK if it fixes car , but a lot if it doesnt.

Thanks for the help , Heres Hoping!!
