Towing 4WD Toyota PU? Eric 8-13-01
Does anyone know much about dinghy towing 4WD trucks? I have a 2001 tacoma 4WD with manual gearbox. Toyota advises against dinghy towing that truck but I don't understand why. The transfer case has a Neutral setting (as does the trans of course). Any words of wisdom?
Thanks!

Hey, for what it may be worth. I have a '79 I pulled . Everything seemed fine till I went over a rough stretch of highway. The truck went into gear. Not just into gear, but into 4 wheel drive. The front drive shaft exploded taking the side of the tranny with it. A rather messy repair job as well as pricey. Now I take the drive shaft out when I pull it. Good Luck

I have pulled a 4x4 fourRunner 5 speed V-6 for 7 years, about 25,000 mi. at all speeds over very rough roads. Never had a problem and mine does not have a neutral in the transfer case. I just put the transmission into neutral and take off. Some transmissions don't get good lubrication when the motor is not running. But you can check by feeling the transmission with your hand to see if its is getting hot. Toyota will say no because of liability if something goes wrong. Also helps to use something like Amsoil in it.
