1989 Winnebago Chieftain Converter Problem Roy 8-26-01
Just bought my first RV and find 12 volt interior lights only receiving 6 volts of power from converter. Also, accessory batteries are basically dead, showing only 6 volts charged. Only getting 6 volt reading from converter. Turning on ignition or starting vehicle brings power supply to lights to 12 volts. Does anyone know what type of power converter is installed on the 1989 Chieftain and/or can you make a recommendation for a replacement converter? Or, has anyone experienced this? What is the cure?

If batteries are basically dead, change the batteries, converter is only to change for AC pwr to DC

If you have a MagneTek 6300 series, then just open the fuse access door and read the printed label attached to it, it'll state if the converter has the charger option. It's not a large output charger, around 3 amps or so, but should slowly charge your coach batteries. If you are only getting 6 volt output from your unit, then it sounds as if you've lost one of the winding taps in the step-down transformer in your converter.

My Winnie has a Power Dynamics PD-712 Converter. 115 VAC at 7 amps, output is 14 VDC at 70 deg., charge rate is 9 Amps, output max is 50 Amps.
Factory rebuilts can be obtained from Power Dynamics, web site, for a much reduced price. Newer converters are much smaller and lighter, but more costly.
