Detroit Diesel Larry G 9-15-06
I have a 1987 Prevost with a 500 HP 8V92 Detroit Diesel. Driving down the road and it was as if somebody shut the key off. I called Good Sam repair, and they sent out a car mechanic. He was totally lost. Then they sent out a mechanic from a truck shop. He tried many things, but it didn't start. At first it would attempt to run, but not fully start. Then they sent out a mechanic from Detroit Diesel. He was there for 5 hrs changing this and checking that. He went through 2 cans of ether, and it never even gave out a puff. He was on the phone for 10 minutes and his shop said the engine would have to come out to be repaired. Good Sam wouldn't hear of it, and had us towed to a campground. Here we sit. Friday night, and nobody is around until Monday. Anybody else ever have this problem?

Two sets of fuel filters haven't helped, so I don't believe another set would change very much. Thanks

There are only two things, basically, that need to be present for the engine to start in a diesel engine: air and fuel. If you are positive that these are present in sufficient amounts, then the problem may be mechanical, which might not allow for either fuel or air. So, make sure your fuel filters are not clogged, and the lines are tight.

I once had a problem with an 8V71, where I had stopped and was idling, and the motor just cut out. I had both fuel and air, and couldn't figure out what happened.

Finally, I had a bus mechanic come out, who just happened to notice that a bolt was lose on the blower drive (air), indicating recent activity in that area, and pulled it off to see what was recently touched. He found that a small, $.02, clip had broken on the "dog bone" end (a splined rod which drives blower to make air and looks like a dog bone). Since the clip wasn't allowing the "dog bone" to do its job, no air was getting into the motor, and so it wouldn't run. He replaced the clip, the "dog leg" could rotate the blower, and the motor fired right up.

Who knows, maybe this will give you food for thought, and you can mention it to your mechanic.

Larry, If Detroit Diesel checked whatever they did, you need to ask them why they feel that the engine has to come out. The only reason that I would guess is that there is a problem with the gears on the back of the engine. You would have to see if the blower drive is turning. If the drive is turning, then you have to see if the shaft to drive the blower is turning the blower. A mechanic could do a lot of checking in 5 hrs.

Hi, Joe. We got the Saturday answering service to contact the service manager for Detroit Diesel. The mechanic told him that he felt it jumped time. He said the blower was turning and he could smell fuel in the exhaust. Funny thing was that this morning it almost started.
Re: Detroit Diesel Larry G 9-17-06
Hi Joe, I found a rectangular hollowed out cover and even a bolt on the frame. I couldn't see in there, but I reached in and found an open area just where you said to look. I put it back on with a little plug facing the bottom. I didn't find a gasket but the park owner gave me some silicone to put on it. He said let it sit an hour or more, so I did that. While it was drying, I went to Advance Auto Parts and bought a mirror to look in at what I did. It looked like the others and the ones on the other side. As soon as it turned over it started right up, but the engine almost ran away and it filled the campground with blue smoke. Now it seems to run great. I shut it off and started it several times and it works like new. Actually it has been hard to start lately, but now it starts like when it was new. Maybe that piece has been loose for a while. Thank you so much for your help.
Re: Detroit Diesel Joe 9-16-06
Larry, I have seen gears on these engines gone to a point that the gear train stops completely. Usually the bearings go bad in the idler, and then they wear rapidly. It is just hard for me to believe jumping time. Before getting into having the engine pulled and a complete teardown, check one more thing. On each side of the engine block there are three air box covers. They are located under the exhaust manifolds. See if all these covers are in place. I have seen where one cover falls off, then there is not enough air to run the engine. I know they will be hard to find, but try if you want.
