My Onan generator is surging, with or without a load. I notice if I manually close the choke slightly the surging goes away. Also if I turn the coach off after starting the generator it will die. I've tweeked all the needle valves to no avail. Hold the choke closed
slightly and it runs like a champ. Could it be a fuel pump problem?

I dont know what year yours is but my 81 onan was hunting like yours and i tightend the tension spring on the govenor and it cured the problem.

sometimes ismo or kent will reply and they are pretty sharp about these things.

Usually it's the carb that is the culprit. You might try cleaning it out. Most of the time rebuilding does not cure it.I think money is better spent replacing it. Try adjusting it by turning the main jet screw in all the way and back it off about 1.5 to 2 turns, still surges, back it out another .5 turns. It sounds like it runs lean. Also it sounds like the cach battery is dead or poor connection on the cables as stated on the previous post . Make sure you have a ground cable attached to the generator housing not the pan as usual. Good luck Ismo...........
If turning off coach causes gen to die, then pwr to gen is weak....check coach bats, and cables going to gen set, may not be getting full 12 - 13.8v to gen set(this is a gas gen?)
