I have a 1984 IH bus with a 392 gas V8. There is no red line on the tach. What is max engine speed? I am using 3400 as max rpm and 3000 as max cruise rpm. Am I close?
You are more then safe, I would say red line would be around 5 - 6 k if not more, guessing but top torque would be around 4700

IHC gas engines are heavy duty truck engines, not glorified car engines like the GM 454 or Ford 460.
The IHC engines are not designed to run at fast speeds.
Redline on the IHC gas engines should be 3400-3500 and max cruise should be 3000-3200. Running an IHC up above 4000 is a sure way to have it end up in your lap in a zillion pieces. You go out of the max torque range at about 3200 RPM. You also do not want to lug the engine much below 1800-2000 RPM.
Running any faster at cruise above 3200 will just waste gas. You won't notice an appreciable difference in the speed of the vehicle.
