I have a 76 Kustom Koach with a Surburban Furnace (sorry I am unsure of the model number) My problem it if I light the pilot and screw the cap back on right away it will burn itself out in about 1-2 minuets. If I light it and leave the cap off for about 10-15 minuets it will stay on and heat the trailor but will blow itself out in about 4-5 hours. Does anyone know what is wrong. I went to the local dealer but was told it would cost me 300.00 just to look at it as they had to take the whole thing out. My problem with what they said was he did not even look in the direction of my trailor never ask me what kind, or model I had. I would appreciate any help anyone might be able to give me. Canada gets really cold without a furnace....
I have a suburban furnace in my 1979 starcraft camper, is it electric and gas? i do not know how to even turn it on. the thermostat is wired to the heater, and the copper pipe coming from the heater has been capped off. inside the heater is like a radiator. please help me before it gets cold, and before the gas goes back up again. no heat!

First, the service center didn't have to look at it to know about how much it will cost. If he is like me, he has seen hundreds of them in the past and has the experience those $$ pay for. Your furnace will need to be taken out and disassembled enough to clean the mud dobber nest out of it. It is running out of air when trying to get it thru the vent tube. Leaving the cap off where you lite it is dangerous as it lets the Monoxide from the burner get into the coach. Another point about these old heaters is they were never made to last 20-30 years. It's close to the end of it's life

Cheers,

Many of the problems in the furnaces built in the 70's was caused by an inadequate pilot flame. It should be strong enough to hear a slight roar from it.Most of these jets are not easily cleaned I would recommend replacing it.They can be removed without removing the furnace. Also I think I would find a new RV repair facility to repair your rig.Or if they actually can get that kind of money for looking at a furnace I gotta move there.

It sounds like Dean works for the shop that wanted to charge the $300.
Even if it has a mud dauber nest in it it won't block enough air to starve the pilot, one could operate a pilot through a straw. If you get a $300 estimate 99 times out of a hundred you'll end up paying it regardless of what they find. Best way to do it is to pay for a diagnostic and have them call you with the problem. In most cases it only takes 15 to 20 minutes to pull a furnace. I'll agree it is not wise to leave the cap off, but the carbon monoxide is very little your stove puts out at least 50 times the amount.
