Transmission Problem Rick 7-3-06
I have a 31' 77 Dodge Apollo motorhome. The transmission does not engage when it's cold or even cool outside. After the engine warms a bit the tranny works fine. We changed the screen 2 years ago and it was much improved. Now it's acting up again. Are there bands in this transmission?
Thanks,
Rick

Yes, bands and clutches. You are probably due for an overhaul. If the filter is and was plugged, the material plugging it is usually worn facing.

Keep in mind that trans fluid expands significantly when it gets hot. What you are describing could be caused by low fluid due to a leak.

Start with the basics: fluid level and condition, check for pan leaks or leaks at the front of the transmission. If you find evidence of a trans fluid leak at the front of the trans and it isn't coming from the pan, chances are very good that you might as well just pull the trans and rebuild it.

Hope that helps!

What is a better route, rebuilding or getting a different tranny?
