Water pump BrendaA 7-3-06
We have a 1992 Chieftan motor home, we just got it last year, used it for three weeks parked at the church campground, went a couple of weeks ago to get ready for camp again this past week, when we go to turn it on, the pilot light stays for a few seconds, then goes out, we have to light it with a clicker, don't like that at all, but does the light go out b/c the water in the tank is at a certain degree, my daughter says they have to keep lighting it, they do have hot water, but, it keeps going out, any ideas why, we are so new to all this, and we do read our manuals, but we are still wondering,
Thanks

I take it that you are talking about the water heater, correct? Since from your description, it appears that once you have lit the pilot, it goes out after a short period of time, is that correct. The pilot will go out for at least one reason, that being insufficient gas flow, which is adjustable, or a faulty thermocouple, which is easily replaced, The thermocouple is a short little round tube that is in the pilot light flame, it has a skinny little tubing that runs over to the water heater control, where it is held in by a small hex nut, ( make sure that is snug, but first back off the nut( there is no gas involved here, and carefully clean the contact surface at the end of the skinny tubing, as well as the contact surface at the bottom of the well that the tubing goes into. Make sure that the end of the thermocouple that goes into the pilot light flame is properly positioned in the flame, so it gets nice and hot, red hot is good.
