The malfuntion indicator lamp in my 2001.5 volkswagon passat is on. I had it checked by diagnostic equipment and the code is p0442 evap emission control system leak(small) I am wondering how I fix it and make the malfuntion indicator lamp go off I tried removing the gas gap putting it back and making sure it clicks 3 times.
Any suggestions?
The first thing I would suspect is a leaking gas cap as well.
Your local parts supplier (Autozone, Checker/Schucks/Krager, Pep boys, Advance, etc.) usually has a test set for radiator caps and gas caps. The test equipment can pick up on a leak that's big enough to set a code, but small enough for you to hear. If you have a good relationship with your local Volkswagon dealer, they will have the equipment to test you gas cap as well.
The code that you have in relation is not the gas cap.that is a different code listed in the ob-II eq, the evap sector of the emission system is a different sensor you should check to see if in fact your warrenty will cover this and if not it should be an easy repair for the dealer.
I received the same code from my ford dealer and I also went to a autozone and the code check out the same. I am also having a substanial amount of antifreeze leaking as well.Have any idea of what it will cost to fix?
