Onan 6.5 emerald hunts Frank 5-8-06
Help I have an onan Gen 6.5 nhe-ir/26-100d that runs ok but when you want more than 15 Amp it starts to hunt very drastically runs ok below that voltage is ok up to 15 Amps then it hunts do you have any ideas I replaced voltage reg

Frank;
Voltage reg has nothing to do with hunting. I hope you kept the old one. First, see that the throttle rod holds the carb full open...without pressure. It should be there, but not push. Since it runs nice without load, the idle jet is at least close to right, but the main jet is either clogged or turned way in, or way too far out. Any black smoke indicates too far out. Set initial at 1 1/2 turns fron finger tight closed. If 3/4 either way is needed to fix the hunt, the carb needs to be cleaned, or you have air leak. It is in the fuel. I assume you have clean plugs, and you know there are 2.

You may also find the governer is out of adjustment. a rule of thumb is with the geni. off, remove the governer rod from the carb, and it should just unhook from the carb with out moving the carb. arm. if this is good the unit may need attention from an onan repair facuility to get the settings proper. If the unit has set a while with gas in the carb., you may get luckly and clean it, or replacement is needed.

I agree with frank, true the governer is the part that usually effects hunting, but if it does it whenever you put on a heavy load the main jet is probibly a half turn off one way or the other. Start it up let it warm up for 10 minutes put a full load on it. Adjust the main jet closed until it starts choking then turn it out till it runs smooth. you should not have anymore problems
