MY 1988 FORD F-150 302 FUEL INJECTED PICK-UP TRUCK WILL NOT START. WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD IT BEGIN TO ACT AS IF IT WAS OUT OF FUEL OR WAS NOT FIRING, BUT WOULD RUN SMOOTH AFTER APPROX. 20 SEC.S & THIS WOULD HAPPEN UNEXPECTEDLY WHILE DRIVING. THIS HAPPENED FOR 2 DAYS & THEN I TURNRD IT OFF AT A STORE & TRIED TO CRANK IT BUT IT WILL NOT CRANK. I LISTENED TO SEE IF THE FUEL PUMP CLICKED ON WHEN I TURNNED ON MY IGNITION & IT DID. THE ENGINE TURNS OVER LIKE A NEW ONE, BUT IT JUST WON'T CRANK. IS THERE ANY TROUBLES THAT ARE COMMON TO CAUSE THESE KIND OF SYMPTOMS FOR THIS 302 FUEL INJECTED ENGINES? HELP...PLEASE BE AS SPECFIC AS POSSIABLE. I USE TO BUILD ENGINES YRS AGO. THINK IT MAY BE THE ELECTIC BRAIN BOX? GEE I HOPE NOT. THANKS...STRANDED FRO NOW...JIMBO
Hey to jimbo it sounds like you should replace your fuel pump relay. if your facing the front of the truck it will be in the upper right corner and theres 2 little boxes and its one of those it cost about 14.00 bucks once u replace that, bleed the air out of your fuel lines and it should crank.
Check for spark. pull plug out hold the end of the plug have some one turn the motor over if you get shocked you have spark if you dont check your distributor cap for cracks or excessive wear marks on the connecting points. check if your ignition rotor is bent to far to make a connection.take ignition module and ignition coil off and take it to the local parts store and have them tested
So it cranks over, but does not fire. Since you can hear the pump turn on, locate the bleedoff/test valve on the injector fuel rail, (looks like a tire valve). Use anything but your fingernail and, using eye protection, depress the valve stem, there should be about 40-45 PSI in the fuel rail. If you have fuel then the next thing is to disconnect the connector off of any one of the 8 injectors, (key off, of course). Get out your 12 volt test light, turn the key to on, and check for current at the two terminals of the injector connector, one of them should be "hot". If so, then connect your test light across the two terminals of the connector and crank the engine, the light should blink on and off. If all of this checks OK, then the fuel system is. Next, check for spark at the plugs. If everything checks OK, then bump the engine over until the timing marks are indexed, remove the distributor cap and check where the rotor is pointing, it should be pointing at #1 or #6 plug wire. If it isn't, then your timing chain has "slipped", in the 302 usually the teeth are torn off the camshaft sprocket. If you didn't get any power at the injector connector, then your switch could be defective, the main power relay could have failed, etc. If you have power, but the light doesn't blink then the computer isn't "firing" the injectors, check the power supply to the computer. If you don't get any spark to the plugs, suspect the TFI ignition module in the side of the distributor, they have a habit of failing.
I have an '88 f-250 (302), and had a similar problem. Fuel pumps were working, fuel at the rail, injectors good, etc. Turns out it was the valve that switches between gas tanks would randomly switch to the second tank (which was no longer there). next time it happens, disconnect fuel line before that valve (if your truck has it) put key in on position, see if fuel comes out, then check after the valve. If there's fuel on tank side, but none on engine side, then you've found your problem.
I have a 1988 ford f250 with a fuel injected 302. The truck has a five speed manual transmission and I need to change the transmission to an automatic. What all needs to be change such as the steering column for example, and can I us the same drive line from the standard transmission. I am making a price list so please tell me the best automatic transmission for towing. Both axles are 4/10 gear ratio
93 F150 XLT. Red if that matters. I just had the oxygen sensor and fuel pressure regulator and it still acts as if it's running out of gas and hard to start after driving a few miles. I took it back to the mechanic and he says it's the fuel pump module. YIKES! He wants to charge me 350 bucks to fix it. I told him to change the fuel filter and see if that helps. What are some other possibilities? I will be installing new plugs and wires this weekend. Any ideas? Sorry to reply, and not do new post. New here.
Diane
Having some of the same problems. 88 Ford F-150. Went to the store one night. It had ran fine. Came back out and had to have towed. When I tried to start all you could here was a click. Been told that might have been the Starter Solenoid. After about a week of sitting, it fired. Replaced the fuel filter in the line. Tried to start again and had the same problem. Had a lot of corrosion on the battery which I have since cleaned, but still having the same problwm?? Any ideas??
My F150 Keeps bouncing, like its running out of gas. but it has plenty of gas in it. I took it to the Ford Dealer and they replaced one of the coil wires. (this was last year) Now this month 3/16/06 the same has happened and they replaces another one of those coil wires for another 350.00. Should I just replace all 8 coil wires and put a new distrubutor.
I tried to put spark plugs and new wires on my 1988 Ford pickup with a 302, fuel injected. It skips enough to believe I did not put the wires back right. I need to know the firing order and how I would check to see if it is correct. Thanks Winford
I have a 1988 ford F-150 XLT 302 the engine will turn over, but will not start,it is firing.the fuel pumps do not come on.i took one of the tanks down and hot wired the pump to the battery and they work, but not pumping fuel to the fuel rail.i also took a test light and checked the wires that plug into the top of the tank and the test light is very dim, also if i take the fuel pump relay and stick the probe in the wire going to the computer you can hear the pump run.changed both relays.still no luck, any advice is welcome, thanks
My 1988 ford pickup with a 300 cid in it broke a wire to the fuel pump relay so we repaced the plug and now it starts and stalls and has no power and smokes black smoke and stumbles on the road ----any help?
My 1988 Ford Truck's radiator is leaking. When i started the truck to add water to the radiator there was a loud metal to metal sound. The noise quit about 5 seconds after it started.I added 1 gallon of water to the radiator and then shut the truck off.The truck continued to run for about 10 seconds after i had turned off the key. I have started the truck several time and no metal sound has been heard.I have water blowing out my exhaust pipe now.
I have a 1988 ford F150 300 6cy.I recently ran into a problem with the fuel sys. It runs but runs out of fuel,
replaced 1 tank fuel pump/low presure pump/ fuel filter/pressure reg. Now it has no power to the pumps at all (Where to look next?
I have an 88ford f150 fuel injected 302. I have had nothing but trouble since i bought the thing i seem to have solved some of them. But now i turn the key on so i tried the neutrual safety test but only i can not get selector past R.What can i do anyone have any suggestions
You might want to check your fuel pump relay. About two months ago my 2 yr old battery was dead and the engine would not even turn over. Always started with a jump start. Bought a new battery and thought all was fine. Heard a weird sound but couldn't find the source. Finally, engine would not start and had to get towed. Mechanic replaced fuel pump. Pump relay was the culprit. When it sticks, it drains the battery and makes a buzzing or humming sound. Luckily for me, it died in my driveway after unloading a full bed of building materials!
HELP!! HAVE FUEL TO FUEL RAIL PULL INJECTORS AND FUEL SPITS OUT EACH INJECTOR HOLE. REPLACED FUEL REGULATOR
FUEL PUMP AND I HAVE POWER TO INJECTORS
BUT INJECTORS WILL NOT SPRAY OR DRIBBLE AT PRIME UT IF I TURN MOTOR OVER THEY WILL SPRAY BUT NOT ALWAYS WHAT CAN I CHECK NEXT
I have a 89 bronco with a 302 it is running really rich and i don't know why i have replaced the eec,o2 cenc, map cenc, egr valve pcm, checked all vac lines, fuel pres. is good at rail and full tune up any idea's.I took it to the dealer and had them do a diagnostic they didn't find ant thing they told me to replace the pcm because the motor was changed from a 351 to a 302
