Problem on a 2000 GMC Sierra Pickup.
Anybody out there have any info on a Evaporative Emission Control System Malfunction. Error Code 0440.
It pops up about every week and stays reset when reset. The condition always occurs on a restart when the engine temp is normal, never cold.
The dealer has reset it 4 times, but has done no troubleshooting as nothing seems to be replaced. I have given up on them and will resolve it myself eventually. I have reset it 4 times myself. and have the manuals ordered. Any Ideas please. Thanks
P0455 OBD Trouble Code
Technical Description
Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (no purge flow or large leak)
What does that mean?
This indicates a fuel vapor leak or lack of purge flow in the EVAP control system. It means a large leak has been detected. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.
Symptoms
You likely won't notice any drivability problems.
Causes
A code p0455 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
• A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
• A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
• Other leak or damaged piece in EVAP system
Possible Solutions
With a p0455, the most common repair is to:
• Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
• Otherwise, replace the gas cap, and/or
• Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses (you may hear a vacuum noise or smell fuel), repair if necessary
I have a Chrysler Sebring 2003 and I recently have been receiving an engine light. I had a handle test placed on it. The code was PO440 a EVAP Emission Control System Malfunction. I am curious as tyo how to repair this without taking it to the dealer. I have reset it through the battery but it returns. The geneltmen who read the code stated it maybe a faulty gas cap but I still have the original gad cap on from purchase last year. What can I do to reapir this?
I am getting a code P0440... and when i loosen the i have a lot of pressure purging out of the filler neck. I replaced the cap... and it is still doing the same thing. So, what would be the possible causes for this high tant pressure? Malfunctioning FTP sensor or defective purge soleniod or pinched line or what else would it be?
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) light comes on for a few days then goes off for a few days then comes on again. I do not want to be ripped of at the VW Dealership shop.
How can I check this myself....I am told by a computer web. site that I should start my car then take off the gas cap and then put it back on. IS THAT SAFE TO DO?? Thanks, M. Wimer
While trouble shooting my "99" cavalier the code P0442 popped up and the code just said I had a small leak somewhere in my evaporative emission control system. Where would I begin to look for this leak and what is the best way to go about fixing it once it is found. P.S. I checked the gas cap and it is secured tightly.
Could be nothing more than a defective gas tank cap. Since you know how to reset the computer, force it to set the code by removing or loosening the gas cap with the engine running and see if it sets the 0440 code.
This evap malfunction thing? what can go wrong with your car if you dont fix it soon. whats the worst that can happen and where should i go to get the done how much should it coast

I own a 1997 Chevroket Cavalier 2.2 L and my diagnostic scan indicates a P0449 code, which is 'evaporative emissions system- small leak'. I've only owned this car for a couple months and am, well, I'm cheap. If it's something simple and I can learn from it, I'll attempt to fix or at least narrow down the problem myself. Unfortunately, the evaporative emissions canister is hidden on the left mid-section under the hood, under a covering. And somehow I don't think I can do a smoke-test without a machine (o can I?) to narrow down the leak. Any suggestions or repair solutions
I have the check engine light on in my 1998 buick century, the evap emission system malfunction. what could this be? is the something that I can do I don't want to get ripped off for something simple
This weekend I change the gas tank of my 1997 Dodge CarVan.
And two days later the engine light went on. I took the car to Auto Zoon, and they told me that I have a P0455 Evap Emission Control System Leak Large.
But they were not able to tell me where it is at? If this is related to the gas tank? I would like to see some pictures so I have idea where in the car this is happening.

Noise heard inside 1997 dodge carvan, mech informed me it was the opening and closeing of the emission control valve nothing to be concern about, however it is annoying and my desire is to stop the noise, provided it will not be expensive, what do you suggest, is it detrimental to the operation of ythe vehicle
