Cracked manifold Sharon Dawn 3-4-03
I have a 93 GEO Prism, I was informed that I have a cracked manifold and also need a gasket. How much do these parts and repair usually cost and how does the cracked manifold effect the running of my vehicle? Whats the purpose of the manifold?
Re: cracked manifold jd 3-4-03
If this is a four-cylinder car, it has two manifolds. One intake, one exhaust. Usually the exhaust is the one that cracks. If you have a crackling or chugging sound that didn't used to be there, exhaust manifold leak or crack. Or loose joint where the exhaust pipe attaches to the manifold. In addition to annoying noise, possible exhaust fumes in the car, possible fire, likely engine exhaust valve damage if run too long with leak where manifold meets cylinder head, likely the car's engine control computer will be tricked into some mistakes. We deal mostly in recreational vehicles here. Motorhomes, converted buses and such. Same principles apply, but you may want to post your question at a forum specializing in cars, like then Imports Forum. I think a junkyard replacement manifold might work for you. God Bless, jd

On a recent attempt to locate an exhaust manifold for my '93 Geo Prizm, I found 5 Prizms in the first self sirve yard. 4 were missing the exhaust manif. and the manif. that was there was.....yep cracked. So I went to another yard and found 3 Prizms. 2 were missing the notorious manifold and the remaining one guessed it CRACKED! As a mechanic with 36 yrs. experience, I am thinking that maybe Geo should be thinking about a recall on an undeniably defective part.
Well.....I'm waiting
