|Onan Gnerator won't keep running||Sven||2-24-03|
When I try to start my generator from either the remote switch or the switch on the generator it does start, however when I release the start button the generator quits.
I believe I have blown a fuse that puts power to the ignition but I do not know where that fuse is. (if that is the Problem)
I have a Onan 4.0 generator Model #BF 36R16004B Ser#J773287952

Every time i try to start it blows a fuse

On the controller box attached directly to the genset are 2 fuses. They are probably old automotive glass style (not the GM style). A 90 degree turn to the left should release the fuse for inspection. Check with an ohm meter, a fuse can look good but be open out of your view.

Depending on your model, there is probably a low oil pressure cut off switch that is overriden during the start phase, and as oil pressure is detected the switch closes and the engine runs. If the switch is bad or no oil pressure is detected, the engine will not stay running.

I had the same problem a while back on my 4KW Emerald genset. Using the schematic in the user manual I traced the cause to a relay on the control board. I don't remember the relay number for sure but think it was called A1K2.
This is the relay that will drop out if the oil pressure switch opens. Not wanting to buy a new board I removed the bad relay and scrounged around in my goodie box and found one with 12V coil voltage and the necessary contacts, and wired it to the board. It's much larger than the original so I had to stay-strap it to the board. It wasn't possible to do a neat job but it works.

I have same issue. I pulled my spark plugs and they were black, running rich. I could only get to one of two. When I replaced it, the genset ran better. I wish I could get to the other one, but it is in the back. I have to pull the unit and I just haven't done so yet.

I have experienced this problem twice. The first time, all that was required was to clean the slip rings. The second time it required replacement of the voltage regulator.
The generator requires enough voltage to be created upon initial starting to set up the magnetic field. If the brushes/slip rings are dirty, voltage will not build sufficirntly. If the regulator is bad, the only cure is replacement.
I have a troubleshooting guide for an experienced person, if you are interested.
