4KW Onan MicoQuite generator intermittent starting problems Mike Greene 2-10-03
I have a 2000 Southwind Storm 30H on a Workhorse chassis. I am continually experiencing starting problems on my 4KW Onan MicoQuite generator, the generator generally runs fine for an extended time 1 or 2 hours plus, but after a shutdown it won’t restart just the triple blink on the generator rocker switch stating a service is needed. I have had the generator serviced three times in the last two months and the last time they ran the system under load with the air, both TV’s and satellite dish on for eight hours and found no issues. I on the other hand ran the generator for 35 minutes while packing to leave for the desert and experienced the soothing quite of my non-working generator, I need not mention the three days of a sauna like conditions as I camped in the California dessert with my generator that would only run when I didn’t need it. I have had my ONAN certified mechanic check circuit boards, Diodes, Fuel supply, and perform the regular service. Just today I was running my generator to recharge my battery banks and when I decided to turn on my air conditioner the chugged to a stop where I had to wait at least an hour to restart it.

I am becoming quite disheartened with my 4KW Onan MicoQuite is this a bad model?
Any tips on testing the unit myself when it quits so I can pass the results on to my mechanic?
Should I just put in a better system and put the MicoQuite troubles behind me, and if so what is the best model and brand to purchase in the 4KW plus area?

Thanks,
Mike
AKA. Not a happy camper

Don't give up on Onan, as they make the most reliable generator in the business. The 4.0 Microquiet is also normally a very reliable generator. If I were to guess, I would be looking for something in the area of a low oil or a low oil pressure shut down. There is also an overheating shutdown device on your generator. Then there is a possibility that the control module is heating up and stopping your generator. Have your mechanic check or bypass these things one at a time when it quits.

I have a hot start problem on onan 4kw
and found the problem. Following is procedure to isolate cause. 1. tried to disconnect oil pressure swithch, still
hot start prooblem. 2 Removed control
board and found CR1 very hot, used a
cool spray from Radio Shack and the
generator started up. Before replace
board try colling parts on controller
board. I will replace the rectifier
and see if this solves the hot start.

Gone Postal. My weather group was donated a 4kw onan micro quiet gas gen set. 9 mts after we got it we finally got it installed and went to start it.. Cranked and started to start then the starter shut down and flashed 32 (low crank speed) Played with it for about two days checking everyhtign associated with the DC side of things. Contacted ONAN and they sent me out a new controler (computer ) installed Ran fine for 3 mts. about 6 or 7 hours of use. just testing and such. I shut it down sat went to start cranked fine srarted to run and shut down and flashing 32. low crank speed. Any ideas Bad controler again??

I have an Ona 4000 Genset that is not running. I can hold the start button and it runs fine but releasing the start button and it has no response. It appears to me by reading all the emails about yopur product that we should all contact Honda and get something for our money that is reliable. any response would be greatly appriciated.

Thank Indiana Butch will be hot at the Bristol Motioer Speedway

Seems like all Onan GenSets have this flaw. My 1987 Onan 4kw BGE "C" GenSet will start then stop when I release the start toggle switch, run a few seconds after releasing the swithc sometime, run longer sometime and run fine occassionally.

Local Onan certified technicians haven't been able to fix it either, yet they charge excessively just to tinker around with it.

I have taken it in for a complete service routine, then back because the problem persisted, yet nothing improves.

If anyone has a line on the cause and fix for this problem thousands of Onan owners will surely appreciate a heads up.

Onan reliability is bs. bought 92 southwind new. first 3yrs it ran but we didnt know how bad it ran because we were new to a genset on ths second rv. generator is an emerald 4000.. after warranty was up, we were held hostage by that gen for threeyrs and almost 2000 dollars repairs. still have repair bills to prove it.after about three yrs out of warr i wrote strong letter to onan about needingmy third rotor in about 7 yrs. they did help me out but their repair charges are horrendous. it ran perfectly for three dry camping seasons in texas, but quit on way home to mich about a week ago.have sent for manual but expect it will be another 3 or 4 hundred too have it running again. dependable? costly as hell

In hot weather my onan gen. shuts down after five min. unless I leave the gen. compartment open--There is no screen or vent on the door--is this normal.

I just had my Onan Emerald 4kw services and it still does the same thing as before service. Hot or cold the genset runs as long as you hold the start switch.

Mechanic replaced the control board and showed me the old one. It appears that one of the High Votage diodes was hot; I belive I can save money and replace the HV Ddiode and replace the board.

My concern to the mechanic was WHY the board heated up, something had to cause this problem. Please recall this problem occures even when cold.

By the way, the mechanic billed the extended warranty company for their charges and claimed that they fixec the problem. Hello!

Re: 4KW gen wont run when start switch is released. Elmer 6-6-07
4K Onan Emerald + will not start most of the time, but will run with switch held in start position and die when released. Seldom it will start and run for a few minutes and if it does everything is normal and then it dies. Voltage is good at full load (air +) Four Onan techs have given me four different possibilities. Oil sensor is OK.
Any help will be appreciated, Thanks, Elmer

Re: 4KW Onan Emerald 1 Vince Pisani 8-9-10
I can't keep the Generator running unless I keep my finger on the throttle. Could that be the problem since I hadn't ran it for 3 months. How hard is it to clean the carburetor if that's the problem. Thank you for your help
