When you say the flame is going around the tank and out the top, do you mean you see flame coming out the top? If you do, you have a problem. And if so, DON'T use it on gas until you get it looked at.

Not to worry, they've just made them quiter. Some of those old Atwaters sound like a jet aircraft when they lit off, really nice when your bed was located nearby!

Hello Joe-

Yesterday evening we nearly fell out of our chair when hearing a high-pitched ringing sound coming from our gas hotwater heater. We turned the thermostate to "vacation" and it stopped. We phoned our plumber yesterday and he sent a fellow out to check the problem this am 11/14/03. The plummer looked bewildered but thought something got stuck in the float-valve where the water comes in at the top of the tank. He set the thermostate on normal and everything seemed to be OK. Well, tonight, it started again with a very hi-pitched ringing. What now?

Thank you in advance for your help.

I just read this message as ours started doing the same thing today. It is 90 degrees out and I keep it set fairly hot, but it's never sounded like this before. It is 8 yrs. old and gas. We are concerned about it. ANyone else have any thoughts?
Thanks
