Cummins N-14 / 444 Oil Pressure Drop Jim 1-28-03
I have a 1991 444 step time N-14 cummins. About two weeks ago it started dropping oil pressure at idle. It does not do it all the time. I've replaced the piston in the oil pump, and rebuilt the stc valve. When the pressure drops, it goes to zero, the oil light comes on, and the timing messes up. The motor has 800,000 miles on it. it had an inframe a little before 700,000 and new rod and main bearings a little after 700,000 ( new owner). I've closed off the supply oil line going to the stc valve to see if it was in the timing, but it still does it. any ideas?

When you say the piston in the oil pump, I'm assuming you mean the relief valve. Have you checked the oil pick up tube? There is nothing else in the engine that would make the oil pressure drop so drastically. There are those small plastic pieces that connect to the injector to change the timing that come apart and loose some oil pressure, and then the engine will smoke extremely bad, but it will still have fairly good pressure. That particular engine wasn't one of Cummins better ideas.
