'91 Ranger won't heat up Pat Crowther 1-23-03
I have a 1991 Ford Ranger that won't heat up - I have changed the thermostat for the third time (195 degree). I have cleaned and flushed the radiator and replaced the coolant. The check engine light comes on sporadically. Any suggestions?

Have you tried to see if your heater core is plugged up? Is your heater control valve working? Does the air go from floor to defrost indicating that all the doors in the heater are working properly? Try all these things and let us know what you find.

Heater core and control valves seem to be open and working properly, as does the air control inside the cab - the problem seems to be that the radiator never heats up, even after thermostat has opened. Lower radiator hose barely gets warm, both heater hoses are warm, but not hot, upper radiator hose gets warm but not hot after thermostat opens. Thanks for your reply.

Is it possible that your fan clutch is siezed up and your fan is cooling the radiator too quickly? Still you should have heat if the engine is coming up to temperature. What degree thermostat did you put in? What does your heat gauge register?

When you put the thermastste in did you perg the air out? if not,to do so you fill the radiator then run the vehical with the cap off untill no air comes up. use a pan under truck though it will push antifreeze out with the air so youll have to add as it goes. if air in it it will do what you discribed. good luck

Did the new TStat have a purge port on it? If so, TStat should be mounted with that "UP".
I always boil a TStat in a pan of water and monitor with a refrigeration thermometer, to make sure it opens and closes as it should, doesn't stick, etc.
Finally, is the new TStat an exact match to your vehicle?
God Bless, jd
