Vibration and clunk John 1-17-03
I have a 1985 Foretravel with a GM 454 and a TH 400 transmission. Recently I had the transmission removed and a new front seal put in it. After I got it back it has a vibration on the road and when I take off from a light it has a clunk in the drive train. It is almost like somebody bumps you in the rear. The shop that did the work checked it and tried a new rear mount. That didn't help. It is annoying to drive. I have had it to three otrer places and nobody seems to be able to pin point the problem. Any ideas?

A "Clunk" when you take off is probably the Left Side Motor Mount. A Clunk when you back=up is the Right side motor mount. A clunk when you come up to a stop, just before you stop and the trans. downshifts back into first gear, right at that instant, you'll hear and feel a clunk in the seat. Ever hear was seems to be the Fan hitting the Fan Shroud, that's the engine jumping up and making the fan hit. You might not hear this noise, because the shroud might be far away so it can't, but there is always that possible.

First I would check the universal joints. Possibly when the transmission was removed some needles were lost in the rear most joint. How is the carrier bearing or bearings? The only other thing that comes to mind is possibly the drive shaft got out of phase and binds on your starting out, and as the coach moves foreward a little and the pressure is decreased the slider moves and gives you the "clunk" you describe.

I haven't got a clue as to what the drive shaft being in phase is. Can you describe what you mean? When the transmission was repaired all the carrier bearings and u joints were checked and all were good.

I'll e-mail you a diagram of what I mean. Just follow my instructions.
