Exhaust Smoke Gary 1-12-03
I have a 2003 Rialta 2.8L 201 hp.vw engine. When I start to move for the first time on a cold start black smoke comes from the Exhaust pipe some times. I haven't driven over 20 miles at a time yet. I was using the wrong octane to start with. I am now using 93 octane. The exaust pipe is a least 22 ft. long. Possible it isn't getting hot enought and stuff is building up in pipe. The engine check light has never came on so I don't think I got a problem but not sure. Haven't talked to the dealer as of yet. The engine just turned 1000. Any ideas?

Black smoke is a fuel system defect. Possible a bad, Mass Air Sensor. Or,A Open Loop- Close Loop Sensor Problem. Mention it to the dealer the next time you take it in, Warranty has to correct and cover that,"Thanks to the good people of the E.P.A." it will be simple fix for the dealer to do. Using Higher Octane gas never hurt anything. It will help to keep the Injectors Cleaner, and you will notice more power and better fuel economy.

Black smoke at start-up means that the fuel air mixture is rich and that is just fine ontill the engine warms up. Other wise stalling, missfire. and backfiring will occure. Talk to the dealer about how engins/transmissions operate. Also use the web to bone up on how things work which is a web-site.
Good luck.
