My bus loses power/speed uphills Georgia Southern 12-27-02
I recently purchased a 1982 school bus. It has a 454 with a 4 barrel holly carb. It had been sitting for four years. I changed the oil, belts, and fuel. I can hold a speed of about 60 max on a level suface but when I start going up a hill my speed quickly goes way down like to 25 mph. Anybody know what I need to do???? No smoke/no clutter at all. Thanks

Do a fuel pump pressure test. With return fuel line hose crimped, should have and hold 6 psi, after cranking engine 4 or 5 rotations. If not, replace pump. Or, this could just be the way the performance of this unit is, Gutless.

Your bus has a governor on the engine. It works off the base of the carb. This could be giving you a problem. There is a small foam air cleaner mounted on the firewall that supplies air to the governor and allows it to operate properly and sometimes will get oil or dirt saturated and will cause the engine to die when you need power the most. This is the easiest and cheapest thing to check.

Can you give me any information about the engine governor on a 2002 MCI bus?
