1977 Ford motorhome wont start ELSIE BLUE 12-8-02
Bought this,1977 FORD/351/8CYL./ drove it home, parked in backyard for a couple of days, moved it to driveway to get ready for a small trip,It hasnt started since...This has all new hoses,2 new marine batt.new starter, too many new parts to mention.I am puzzeled to say the least. Is it a possibility that it could need grounding straps? A friend also said he had a similar problem with his MotHo. and it stopped immediately, had it towed to rv dealer(on trip) and they replaced a ceramic button or something on that order. what could this be?CAN ANYONE PUT SOME INPUT IN ON THIS PROBLEM? THANKS

Is the engine spinning over and not starting? If so the first thing to check is for spark.

Yes, there is spark.is it true if the aux. switch for electric is on, the motor wont turn over?I bought a new distributor, but found the old one was different and was still working properly. Then we thought maybe it was the ignition switch, relaced that. Almost all is new under the hood.Would grounding have anything to do with this problem? This thing run just fine when I drove it the first couple of days.Another question, is there some piece that is capped or coated with a ceramic type of material, and if so, could this have a crack in it?

Re: 1977 Ford motorhome wont start Joe 12-9-02
Not turning over could be a starter relay, neutral safety switch, the starter itself, bad battery connection, loose wires or ground, and even though there is a new battery, it could be drained or dead. The starter relay has to have a good ground. The connections have to be clean and tight. I have seen many older Fords with corrosion inside the battery cable where it goes into the battery post terminal. Try starting it in neurtal, but block the wheels before you take it out of park. Hope this gives you a place to start. Good luck.

I did that on my old r.v just o find out that my new starter was the problem...it was not the ignition switch. did you ever get your 1977 running and if so what was the problem? My runs errasdicartely. if I get it started it will run for hours. but if I turn it off I am back at square one....not starting at all....i did pour a little gas in the the carbuerator and it would fire up....but then i noticed that the igniton starter was loose and I need to look at that issue as well...my wouldn't turn over and nowe all I hear is a clicking sound....if anyone has any suggestions could they give me a call at 414 332-3150?

Let's see if I've got it straight. Engine has spark, engine turns over, but won't start?
Re: 1977 Ford motorhome wont start Ron 12-20-02
The ceramic deal you might be talking about is the ballast resistor. Don't know about Fords, but Dodge RV owners learned to carry a spare wherever they go. Let's be clear, when you turn the key...nothing? or the starter is cranking, but the engine won't start? or ?
Re: 1977 Ford motorhome wont start Rocky 12-19-02
That vintage of Ford has an Aluminum module with 2 plugs dangling out of the side plugged into the harness.

These things can die and never run again, even though there is some spark, it is erratic (the ones I have seen).

I would try that. It was a pretty common thing back 'in the day....

We used to run Wreckers and carried spares. I personally changed about 4 alongside the road.

Good Luck
