Chev 6.2 diesel rick warren 12-7-02
I just bought a 86 chev 1 ton flat bed diesel std transmission I needed something to tow my tandem trailer bobcat and attachments I used a 1/2 ton 350 before but it didn t have the power for the hills The diesel has 150000 kiometers on it had a mechanic do a quick check on it and he said it was in excellent shape The problem is it tows great in low to 1st then there seems to be a wide gap in gear ratio s to 2nd I end up gearing down to 1st and crawl up the hill Any suggestions on what to do with this problem I can t afford the duramax diesel and allison auto thanks

Well a 6.2 is not the ideal engine to tow, it's a 148 HP @ 3600,
246 ft/lbs @ 2000 RPM, so in order to pull a bit the engine need to stay just above 2000 RPM.
VS a 350 gasser above 8500 gvwr= 185 HP @ 4000 RPM & 285 ft/lbs @ 2400 RPM.
Sure the diesel is cheaper to run,but weaker,= use less fuel,
In my humble opinion, to tow a ford 7.3 or powerstroke is the way to go, next up cummins engine in dodge, but I don't like dodge, if money is no object, I would put a cummins in a ford 350 along with an allison AT 545 as the E4OD from ford worth C....
What I would try since you got it now, is to change th rear tire with a lower profile, (like serie 50 or 60) would try with use one from salvage yard first to see how it work out.
good luck wrench

To wrench:
My 6.2 diesel in 88 Chev Van won't turn
over fast enough to start once engine is
warmed up. Runs great otherwise. Starts immediately after glow plug goes out when cold. Once warmed up, barely turns over, even with fully charged batteries, and I am running 1200 Amps
Just today, after a 10 mile ride and back home, the glow plug light woundn't come back on for about 2 hours.
This has been a problem with this vehicle since new in 1988.
Any thoughts.

BILL I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 82 GMC 6.2 TRUCK. THIER IS A TEMP SENSOR IN THE TOP OF THE DRIVERSIDE CYLINDER HEAD THAT STICKS UP. THAT SENSOR WILL STOP WORKING AND THE ONLY TIME THAT I COULD GET MY GLOW PLUGS TO KICK IN IS WHEN MY ENGINE WAS COLD OR SITTING FOR 5 HOURS SO REPLACE THAT OR DO WHAT I DID AND JUST RUN A BUTTON OFF OF A SEPERATE SELONOID AND PUSH THE BUTTON FOR 5 SECONDS EVERY TIME AND YOU CAN DO IT MANUALLY TO SAVE MONEY.

Your problem sounds like the one I had on my 91. At 135k I thought the starter was ok. The Local GM mechanic said that his experience was that was one of the first places to look. With a rebuilt starter it solved the problem. Good luck. dtanner

Jason, you seem to know a bit about 6.2s I have just put one in my Landcruiser and it has just come up for it's first service. I was surprised to find that the sump only holds about 5 litres. Is this correct as my old engine used to take 11 litres, any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

The pump had not been replaced or worked on in 10 years 100 k miles was surging and completely dying when you came to a stop and running rough replace pump lots more power but if it sets any length of time 20 minutes hard to start surges and dies all over again
Re: chev 6.2 diesel chad 11-20-05
I have an 84 c10 with a 6.2, 120k on the motor. it ran great then one day it started to act like it was running out of fuel. so, i changed the fuel filter and still had the same problem. now it will not run right, it runs like it is not firing on all cylinders and is blowing alot of white smoke. i changed the injectors and now i do not have any fuel in the return lines between the injectors. my next step is to replace the pump, do u think that is the right way to go?
