MCI8 8V92 Exhaust racket Mark 11-4-02
I have a MCI8 with a loud clacking sound that seems to coming from the exaust. She's blowing more smoke than usual. Performance is o.k. The engine had a in frame rebuild about 20k miles ago. Relativly new, any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Mark

It sounds like a beginning of a burnt valve, loose valve seat, or a broken valve spring. If it is a valve spring, the valve hangs open until the piston goes past the vanes in the liner. then the compression slams the valve shut and you hear the "tinny clang" of the valve slamming shut. If this is the case, it needs IMMEDIATE attention, as the head will snap off the valve. If it is a burnt valve or a loose valve seat it also needs IMMEDIATE attention. The smoke is probably from the compression being low on that cylinder.
