Continue-Coil Voltage/missfiring Ralph 8-9-02  
Continuation from posts of 5th Aug.
Sam, Joe et al, Ignition switch was not the problem. Engine is still missfiring and I am getting intermittent HT shocks thru the ignition key, carb and van body. Have run 10 gauge copper wire from van body and engine block direct to the battery -ve terminal. It is clamped with bolts to bare metal that has been sanded so grounds are good confirmed by ohmeter and voltage readings.
Voltages with ignition switch in run position, coil +ve 8V, -ve 1.5V. Battery, 12V. Resistor ends 5 ohm 12v & 12v, 1 ohm 12v & 8.5v.
Voltages with engine running, coil +ve 10v, -ve 3.5v. Battery 14V. Resistor ends 5 ohm 13.5V & 13.5V, 1 ohm 13.5V & 10V.
In all cases the voltage readings are steady. Tester is 20,000 ohm/volt.
Distributer is almost new with no play in the shaft.
ECU is well grounded to the van and battery -ve terminal.
Info. only there is no starting bypass wire at the ballast resistor. Can anyone come up with a scenario that could cause the shocks and missfiring. Could it be the battery for instance? Thanking you all in anticipation, Ralph.

I have a '78 Apollo motorhome on the M600 Chassis with the 440 and I am experiencing the exact same problem with all of the same symptoms you described. I have been chasing this problem for over a week now and I am going crazy. PLEASE HELP!!!! What did you find Ralph!!! Thanks for any help you can give.

Ralph, when you ran a direct wire and the miss went away, where did you run the wire from and where did you run it to? There is some of your solution in the fact the problem went away with the direct wire. As you probably know, it is difficult to help solve a problem of this sort without a "hands on" situation. Sometimes it is impossible to solve a problem without being there, so be patient while we try to guess what you have done and are doing without being there.

Joe, One test was bypassing the ignition switch which turned out to be a false alarm. The other was connecting battery positive directly to coil +ve. I thought this solved the problem but now I am not so sure as the problem may be intermittent. Does it make sense to run this test again based on the symptoms I am getting and is there a danger of damaging the coil,ECU or any other components in the ignition circuit? Thanks, Ralph.

If you haven't done this already, I would run a jumper from the positive post on the battery to the ignition switch side of the ballast, first removing the wires coming from the switch. That way you can not hurt anything....Start it, run it and then see what happens.

Joe,"great minds think alike" he said with a grin. I was going to suggest that Ralph run a jumper wire from battery (+) to coil (+). Then go ahead and start engine and then turn key off, engine of course will continue to run and power to the module will be running throgh the 5 ohm resister and any wiring fault in the OE wiring from the key will be bypassed. We'll see what Ralph posts after doing the bypass/jumper tests.
