1995 FORD THUNDERBIRD DONNA 8-6-02
I have a 1995 Ford Thunderbird, in
the last year the yellow check engine
light comes on and off. The dealer
replaced the egr valve. I was using
89 octain gas switched back to 87 octain
and now it goes on and off. We tend to
burn 1/2 quart of oil every 2 weeks.
Could the O2 sensor be reading this.
We also have a flutter in the gas pedal,
I have put in fuel injector cleaner
this tends to help, do you know what
causes this.

any info would help

What you have is called a "soft" code. The only way to see what the code is to hook up a scanner to the vehicle and determine what is setting the code. If the light is off and the vehicle hasn't been started over 50 times, the code should be stored in the soft code memory. Otherwise we would all be guessing as to what the check engine light means.

There is more to it than just putting on an EGR valve. This engine needs to have the EGR ports under the intake elbow cleaned out. It is the big aluminum thing behind the throttle body if it is a 4.6(which I think it is). Takes about 2 hours to access and clean the holes out. Second thing you need to do is clean the MAF sensor elements. The MAF sensor usually won't turn on the MIL (yellow lite) but the EGR flow will. The EGR will also set a code. And, change the fuel filter every 10,000 miles. It will be a happy car.

I am worried about breaking down.
I have also looked up some info on maf sensor and the knock sensor. I think
I can give the code tommarrow.
thanks, it perplexes me.

Most all engine management computers have a "limp-in" mode that enables the engine to keep running in the advent of a sensor or activater problem, albeit maybe not as well when everything is operating correctly. Given the number of computer "controlled" vehicles out there and their age, one still seldom sees a significant number stranded by the roadside.

What could be the problem if my thunderbird will crank and crank but wont start. oh, it also has the 4.6L V8
Re: 1995 FORD THUNDERBIRD Donna 8-7-02
Thank you Sam, It has been running
rough and when I take it in they
fix it temporarily and then it becomes
a reoccuring problem. I know allot
of people who have this same situation
and the guess work can be expensive,
the manual does say that the yellow light means get it checked at the earliest convience, I just wish I could
get it fixed once and for all but funds
are running low.

My fuel gage always says full, and my speedometer quit.
Re: 1995 FORD THUNDERBIRD Joe 8-7-02
What are the miles on your car? Is the shop that works on your car just doing hit and miss work, or are they scanning with a diagnostic computer. Just jumping the data plug and retrieving the codes isn't enough. You should have the proper tool to scan and test components as they are in use. We generally hook up the scanner and drive the vehicle if we have a problem like yours.
Re: 1995 FORD THUNDERBIRD DONNA 8-8-02
The code that we got awhile back was P1408. THE LOCAL OIL SHOP HOOKED
UP LAST NIGHT AND GOT A CODE OF P0402 EGR, EXCESSIVE GOING OUT. WE HAD THE
EGR REPLACED LAST SPRING. OUR CAR
HAS APPROXIMATLY 92500 MILES ON IT.

My T-Bird is burning oil like it is the thing to do. It also makes a very bad skeking noice when I turn the steering wheel. I had the ioil changed on it on schedule but it is still burning too much oil. Any suggestions?

Has your catilytic converter ever been tested?
Re: 1995 FORD THUNDERBIRD DONNA 8-8-02
No, they have never said anything
about it.
Re: 1995 FORD THUNDERBIRD Joe 8-10-02
Well Donna, I have seen these become partially clogged and set the code you are now getting. That is a simple test.
Re: 1995 FORD THUNDERBIRD ronnie 10-6-03
Well it is kind of neat that I found this web page, but about my tbird my check engine light has just come on and the code was either 1407 or 407. but it said the EGR valve low pressure no big deal, i need to to change it. but get this, when I make a right hand turn my oil prussure gage drops all the way down and the check gages light comes on until I give it gas or straight out from the turn.any explanation besides low oil?
