Dometic Refrigerator Al 7-29-02
I just got back from a 3000 mile trip out west. Each day I had to clean out the burning area of my fridge. Something that looked like thin rusted metal kept falling down on the burner. I thought it was just some rust at first, but it kept coming out in sheets. It looked like paper, but metal. All told, I would say that I could have filled two shot glasses with the stuff. We ran the refrigerator non stop for three weeks. And we used both gas and electric along the way. Any Ideas??

The debris that you found on your refrig burner came from the flue.

This is normal as the refrigerator ages.

You will need to clean the flue out with a brush or some other implement to scrape the rust out of it.

Once cleaned out you shouldn't have this problem for the rest of the season.

But it will happen again over time.

The next time that it starts to happen clean it out again.

Presently there is nothing to worry about unless the flue rusts through.

Like I said this is normal, but the flue does require cleaning from time to time.

Hope this answers your question.

The book shows a baffle up in the flue. Won't a brush mess it up. Also, How can I get up in there. There is not a lot of room from below and I looked down from above and couldn't see it.

There may be a spiral baffle in the flue. You could cover the orfice and with a sharp hard object, tap on the base of the flue to loosen any rust. Then with compressed air, you can blow from the bottom up to get any remaining particles. Then clean whatever rust you can get before uncovering the orfice. Replace the cover and hope for the best. Good luck.

To clean the chimney with a brush will require removing the roof vent cover and then removing the baffle in the flue of chimney (has a loop to pull out with).

Good luck and enjoy!

Is it ok to leave your fridge running all the time?

We don't have any choice since we live in the coach fulltime. These type refrigerators are the everyday norm for much of Europe and are made to be used fulltime.

We hooked one up in 1979 in our cabin that runs on propane. it was out of a 1971 Winebago. It is still working fine.

Thanks to both of you, I'll keep it going then. I'm happy to have found this site as I frequently have questions.

If you are going to run it full time then make sure the coach is level. These fridges run fine if the coach is moving or if it stationary AND level. If you run them for a long period in a stationary coach that is not level then they will not last as long. Can't remember the exact details but the cooling element gets clogged up.
