My Other Bounder/Ford Chassis Prob Phil Grudzinski 7-27-02
My gas guage quit working. First assumption is that the in-tank float failed, BUT, a few days later, my engine temp guage also quit. Both guages are side-by-side and are in the same dash cluster and share the same wiring harness connection. I'm thinking it's a related problem and not necessariy a tank float problem, but I don't know how to diagnose it. I disconnected and reconnected the wiring in the dash cluster, but that's all I could think of doing. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

You might check your fuses for the instrument panel or related gauges. Also, you can use an ohm meter to find a possible open circuit or a short in the wiring. Sometimes, connectors could become corroded or work itself loose as well. Have you done some work underneath the dash lately? Or, it might be a quirky coincidence that both sending units went awry at about the same time. How old is the rig? Good luck.

Phil, there is a small regulator on the back of the instrument panel that controls some of the gauges. When this goes bad, some of the gauges stop working. Without checking it myself, this would be my best guess. Your local Ford dealer will probably know the part you need. When you get the part, it will be easier to find the bad one by comparison.
