TRANSMISSION LEAK JIM 7-26-02
I have a 1974 starcraft starcruiser with a dodge 440. The trans works fine but leaks when sitting. if I add a couple of quarts to bring it up to full it is fine for days as long as I drive it. When I park it, it leaks down
Re: TRANSMISSION LEAK L Hyzer 7-27-02
Where is it leaking from on the transmission?

Is it the seal on the transmission pan? If its the gasket on the pan you should not have a problem replacing the gasket. If its leaking at the front or rear of the trans then those seals will have to be replaced. In order to do that the trans will have to be dropped and repaired.

I have a 1999 Ford Ranger. I developed a leak at the front of the motor, down by the power steering mechanism. I just added transmission fluid, is it possible that little cooler that is down there is the problem ? After being parked there is a little puddle of fluid under the front of the motor. Ive not had to add any fluid but transmission fluid.
Re: TRANSMISSION LEAK sheila 8-1-03
We are adding transmission fluid to our 89 buick lesabre on a daily basis. the car does not shift smoothly when changing gears.we realize there is a leak some where, we have not determined just where. what do you suggest we do to find out where the leak is coming from? We like to start with the least expensive way and then work from there.
Re: TRANSMISSION LEAK Jim Austin 7-27-02
Its leaking near the front. It looks like it may be coming out of the shift shaft seal but I am going to pull the flywheel cover to be sure it is not coming from there. My concern is, Why is it only leaking when parked and not when running?
Re: TRANSMISSION LEAK Joe 7-28-02
If it is leaking from the "shift shaft", the reason that it leaks when stopped and not running is because much of the transmission fluid is suspended doing it's job when you are running, and when you shut it off all the fluid returns to the pan and the level raises to where it floods the shaft area and so it then it leaks out.
Re: TRANSMISSION LEAK Jim 7-28-02
Is it supposed to drain back as you describe?
Re: TRANSMISSION LEAK Joe 7-28-02
Yes it is.
Re: TRANSMISSION LEAK Jim 7-28-02
Ok,I washed the whole area down and the leak is from the shift shaft seal.
THANKS
