1985 7KW Kohler Generator Roger Thompson 7-23-02
My 1985 7KW Kohler generator started on it's own and will not shut down with any of the three shut off switches. The generator "slows" when the off switch is pushed but continues to run. In order to shut it down, I had to disconnect one of the wire plugs on the top of the control unit. When I plug it back in, the unit again trys to start. I do not have access to a schematic for this model or a source for parts. I am currently on vacation in Myrtle Beach, SC and need to get this problem fixed before I start for home on Aug 3rd. I imagine that the switch shorted and is now in the on position. Anyone experience anything like this? Any suggestions for a fix?

Suggest you ohm out each switch to determine which is shorted. Probably the start switch. Once you have found the culprit you can do one of two things. Locate a replacement or until then diconnect when not wanted. Good luck & enjoy!

I'm assuming you have two remote switches and one on the generator. I would suggest disconnecting the wires on both switches and then plug the wire back in on the control box. If it trys to start, you have a problem with the wire, and if it doesn't, try hooking up one switch and then the other to find the culprit. The wires could be pinched somewhere leading to the switches.

My 7kw has a bad breaker and Im trying to remove it w/o removon the generator. Is there a diagram anywhere that shows how the breakers are held in? I can barely see them with the side cover removed because of the limited access. thanks!
