|Diesel Pusher Chassis||Bill||7-20-02|
I am going to buy a used 38ft Diesel Pusher. (1995 to 1998)
I would like some help in selecting the right chassis and motor size.

The chassis may very well depend on the motorhome manufacturer. On the other hand my suggestuon would be to go with a Cat diesel with at least 300hp. You will find that the Cat is the most "Bulletproof" engine on the market as well as being the easiest to find someone to service it. There is a great network of Cat dealers to provide service in any emergency you may have. God luck.

Almost all of the diesel pusher chassis were built either by Oshkosh (now Freigthliner) or Spartan.
Engine choices were mostly Cummins 5.9L/ISB or 8.2L/ISC or the Cat 3208 or 3116.
Transmission choices almost always Allison AT540/MT640 series hyrdalically shifted tranmissions or on the newer rigs the electronically controlled World Trans.
In most cases, the larger engines with the larger transmissions are the better choices. Stay away from the AT540 series transmissions because they are not built heavy enough for the application. They also do not have much hold back on downgrades--they basically freewheel.
Good luck and happy trails.

My wife and I bought a 1992 elite diesel pusher 33' with a chassis by Oshkosh. We are trying to locate a chassis manual. Have any Idea where We could find one? Are there any on the Internet that one could download?
