|Engine and trans swap into 1976 GMC motor home||Sam||3-21-14|
|I have a chance to buy a decent GMC motor home (Front wheel drive). the engine and trans are shot. what would be a easy swap?|

|Sam, By the sounds of it, the unit your talking about will most likely have an Oldsmobile engine & transaxle unit from a Toronado. |
To answer the question...you first would want to find out if its a 403 or 455. The "easiest" swap would be to stick to the same family..either 403 (small block)or 455 (big block), however the Olds engines have MANY components that are the same (the big block is really the same as a small block with 1" added to the top of the block when cast. A swap from a 403 to the big block family is a rather easy task also & would be my choice due to the weight your wanting to move. The problem with all of this stuff is the last 455 was made in 1977.
As for the transmission, it is really a TH400, cut in half, slid sideways & driven by a chain similar to a 4x4 transfer case. Any transmission shop should be able to rebuild the unit you have.
I am an Olds enthusiast & should be able to answer any questions you have. Hope this Helps, Lorne

|Thanks for the info Lorne it is helpful and I will see if I can find the olds combo in my area. but do you have any idea if any newer front wheel drive combination would work?|
