Dometic rm45 keith 5-7-13
Hello,
im having a problem with a old late 70's trailer fridge. when I bought the trailer the fridge was blown, so I replaced it last summer with a old rm36 (I think) that I had kicking around that I knew worked (the width was the same but shorter so I filled in the gap. so I installed it and it light right up, with in a few hours the little freezer had ice, but I could not get it to cool anymore than 45/50 deg, during the day with regular use going in and out a few times. so I wrote it off as no good, so over the winter I purchased a used dometic rm45a.it sat in my driveway under a tarp all winter, so that being said I wanted to bench tested it on hydro before installing it into the trailer as modifications needed to be done to the trailer cabinet. so after a day and a half on hydro it was working fairly well, on 5 or 6 it went down to 25/30 deg, so I thought great lets install, I then modified cabinet and it fits to all specs for the install directions for the fridge (I have the instructions) it was about 6pm by the time I got it all set and hooked up and lit. just to be safe I set it to max for the night. I went out around 11pm just before bed and YES the freezer was icing up. so I went to bed. well omg it was 20 deg in the lowest part of the fridge. so I wad some things to do for the day and didn't get back till around 330pm, first thing I did was checked the fridge and it as 50 deg, why I said, here in Ontario we have had some above normal temps for this date it was like 23 deg not extremely hot but warm. so I took it all apart cleaned out the burner, jet, and checked the flue for any problems, didn't see any. so thinking about last summers issue with the smaller fridge I put in I started trouble shooting because now that I think about it, it also cooled over night but heated up throughout the day, and now doing it again. so I changed the regulater with another one I had. well I put it all back together again, and lit it for the night., surprise surprise, 20/25 deg again in the morning. again away for the day, 24 deg outside temp, got home around 5pm and fridge temp of 50+ deg again,
so why is this happening, cooling very well over night and heating up during the day, 2 faulty regulators? its a double regulater im using 1 bbq tank on one side full and another empty one off just to plug the other hose. thermostat is at max.
pls help

What we have here is a lack of air flow.

In the cold of the night the fridge finds it easier to create the needed air flow up the back and through the roof.

Durring the day i am guessing there is a complex series of openings and gaps above the fridge that mess up the air flow.

Rather than mess with this we generally install a fan to aid the air flow.

Good Luck

Hi. thx for the reply, I also believe its airflow issue, so I double checked my rough in and corrected any problems it correct.
the instructions state 21 7/8 wide opening, that's fine I have that but its not the actual opening, that's to the 3/4" "studs" around the opening, then the outer wall panel, so its actuality inch and a half wider that the opening, and 3/4 on the top. does this make sence?
another problem could have been not level. see I leveled the trailer by eye, turns out I was almost dead nuts sideways, but 2" end to end, would that really matter, I know they say to be level? I have been on hydro for the last couple days and its been cool (avg 10 deg) for the last couple days here in southern Ontario and the fridge is working great, but its cool out. were supposed to hit low 20's again Wednesday, does the fridge require the same ventilation to function properly on hydro as gas? i'm going to continue monitoring on hydro and see how it works when we hit the 20's again, if it works well I will switch to gas, if it act up I have a propane problem, if it warms up again can you say the fridge is bad? and just cant keep up in the heat? its 10 deg out right now and the fridge is 25 deg
thx keith
